• STAGE 1: Gingivitis
• In this stage, plaque accumulates and hardens into calculus
• There is reddening of the gums
• No tissue attachment is lost

  STAGE 2

• STAGE 2: Early Periodontitis
• In this stage, there is infection of the gum and bony tissue
• The tissue swells
• There is up to a 25% loss in tissue attachement

  STAGE 3

• STAGE 3: Moderate Periodontitis
• In this stage, there is up to a 50% loss of attachment to surrounding bone
• Irreversible bone loss is also likely
• Roots may be exposed
   
• Tooth loss is probable

  STAGE 4

• STAGE 4: Advanced Periodontitis
• In this stage, there is over 50% loss of attachment to surrounding bone
• There are blood and pus surrounding the tooth
• The teeth may be falling out
• Irreversible bone loss has occurred (see image below)
• Professional dental care and cleaning are recommended ASAP (within a month)
